Is peak oil a science or a conspiracy theory? 5 Years, 5 Months ago

I am surprised that the phenomena of peak oil is not talked about by mainstream media and the "experts". All that we get is that the Muslims are going to eat my children and climate change is a "scientific fact", and we better change otherwise the planet will be a million times hotter next year. Or maybe climate change is due to Islam?
Is peak oil a real scientific theory or not? Of course, we have the evidence that the US peaked in 1971, and the UK has passed the peak as well. So it is obvious that the world will peak at sometime. Or not?
Does anyone know the story? Why is it kept under wraps?

edited by: sponge_cretin, Dec 02, 2006 - 01:33 PM

We seem to be running out of cheap oil, but, on the other hand, the world contains
enough oil for thousands of years, e.g., it is possible to extract oil from sea water. Unfortunately, at the present time it requires more energy to extract this oil than is contained in the oil. We may be reaching a technological ceiling on our ability to recover surplus energy from increasingly uneconomical oil supplies

Yes, that is sometimes called the "net energy" problem.
It becomes harder to extract the stuff. With fresh fields, apparently, all you have to do is drill and it comes up like magic.
I know some people believe that the oil is "running out", but the peak oil fundamentalists have never claimed that. It is just that there is going to be a "peak production", in other words, the oil fields peak in their ease of oil extraction.

I do know that ethanol is getting cheaper and cheaper to make.
Right now, it's mostly made from the sweet part of corn. But, we have a new technology being perfected called " cellulosic ethanol " which breaks down the actual plant matter ( cellulose) into simpler sugars with enzymes , which when yeast and water are added to, will make ethanol. If termites can break down cellulose from things like wood, why can't our scientests? Heck, a canadian company is already doing this but it will probably take a a couplpe or four years for cellulosic ethanol to be more common-place within the ethanol industry. So, we are about to get a much higher production out of the corn fields that we do have.
Also, the canadians have proven reserves of oil in an amount that would make their country in the top 5, worldwide for proven reserves. So, they probably have more oil than, iraq or venezuela or america or a lot of the smaller mid-east companies. The thing of it is, is that this oil wouldn't be cheap cheap oil, b/c it is in their sands, and shale which has to be broken up to to get the oil out. In any case, I am not worried about oil supplies for my lifetime or even my grandchildren.

edited by: dallas470, Dec 03, 2006 - 02:34 PM

I don't think this is philosophy of science. It is a debate about scientific fact, concerning which none of the current thread participants seem to be offering any verifiable data. Besides, conspiracy theory innuendo generally belongs in the Open Forums section, to which I will move this thread.
For what it's worth, if you want a conspiracy theory: I'm willing to believe the vast majority of the world's climatologists who state that global warming is a fact, as over against the global warming critics, who are, in my opinion, probably all dependent on money from Big Oil.

edited by: Didymus, Dec 03, 2006 - 01:39 PM

There is no doubt that global warming is a fact. The real question is just how much consumption of fossil fuels will we have when gasoline costs are so high? Also, even electricity and everything would just cost more. Gas is getting more and more expensive, and if we can't find an alternative then industrial society will be up sh!t creek. My own view is that Americans will come out on top, like we always have but we may have to give some things up eventually.
That's why I go by the GOP party line of not giving a hoot about global warming.
